Alex (12/02/1378) – "Metropolitan of Kiev and All Russia", the son of Chernigov Boyar Fyodor Byakonta was born in Moscow in late XIII and XIV in the beginning. Received the baptismal name Eleutherae-Simeon. From an early age showed the desire for monastic life.
20 years, he was tonsured at Moscow's Epiphany Monastery, in 1345 he was ordained a bishop of Vladimir, and in 1348, after the death of Metropolitan Theognost, went to Constantinople for consecration in metropolitans and received this dignity, despite the fact that He had already dedicated to another – Roman, therefore the fight broke out between them, from which the winner was Alexis, thanks to his perseverance, energy and firmness of character – qualities which, combined with wit and extensive education helped him to acquire great influence and power not only in affairs of the Church, but also on political events and supply archpastoral power to unprecedented heights in Russia.
At the same time, the severity of his life he has gained universal respect for, transformed into a profound reverence, when the death of Alexis, followed on Feb. 12, 1378, were rediscovered his power May 20, 1431 (by Arch. Filaret, but by the Metropolitan Makarios in 1439 PM) and since then he has become one of the most revered Russian saints, miracles, which are described in numerous Lives.
In the spiritual literature preserved letters, sermons, and translations of Metropolitan Alexis: "I may add. To do. St. Fathers" (1849); "edifying reading" (1861) and in other journals, and in the Miracle Monastery stored holograph his translation of the New Testament , painted them when he was in Constantinople in 1355, translated literally close to the Greek text. Church celebrates the memory of the saint on February 12, and the acquisition of its relics – 20 May. His relics repose in the Miracle Monastery.
